School attendance varies between 60 to 80 children depending on weather conditions and festivals. We also have children under school age and over school age that we give medical attention and counselling to. We are now caring for over 120 children.
One child that we have been caring for since February 2008 is five year old Parvati. Her and her brother Malesh were orphaned in 2006 when their mother was killed by a drunk driver (their father died many years before). Malesh struggled on his own to take care of her, but her health condition steadily deteriorated. In August, we admitted Parvati into a very good hospital where she spent two weeks in ICU. Her condition stabilized and after a lot of confusion regarding living arrangements, she is now living with a foster family. Malesh is very happy that she is safe and happy!
When Sunil's grade 10 registration came to his house, he walked into the Khar school the next day with a very suspicious grin on his face. He flashed his ID card to the staff and everyone was ecstatic. He has a lot of work to do to prepare for the April exams, but is a very hard worker and we have no doubt that he will be ready. He will set an incredible example for the younger students of One!; proving that anything is possible.
