Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.

Backpacks!!

At the beginning of June, the American School of Mumbai Grade 2 classes brought in backpacks filled with school supplies and goodies for our children. They managed to get together more than 45 backpacks and enough supplies to stock our shelves.

On the first day of school for the year, June 9th, the Khar School students who had great attendance from the year before received a backpack. The children were ALL smiles. They wouldn’t let their bags out of their sights. In fact, they had to be torn off their backs for lunch and exercise classes!!!

As the week progressed, all students received a backpack.

Nallasopara Starts with a Bang

Nallasopara registration day was on June 15th. What a crazily wonderful day it was! The parents and children were a buzz with the new school year coming and it was wonderful to feel all of their energy. We registered over a hundred kids that day on top repainting all of the boxes so they felt new and sorting out new supplies for all the children to start off with. Just another reason for them to be excited about school.

It must have worked because the rest of the week followed in the example of that Monday. There was a constant flow of parents begging to have their names added to the registration list and children coming on their own wanting to be a part of it.

By June 22nd, we had 243 children registered. The next thing to work on is making sure that all the children registered attend regularly.

We added steps—now there are 9 steps in the morning and 5 steps in the afternoon. We also moved from a 4.5 day schedule to a full 5.5 day schedule. We are also serving basic meals on top of snacks.

Now that Nallasopara is sponsored by Children’s Hope India out of New York, we have named the project ‘Ek Asha’ which means ‘One! Hope’. The name is just perfect for the Nallasopara environment and will constantly remind us of our values and bring us back to the fact that every step counts and every step gives hope.

Volunteer Appreciation Picnic

Between 30 and 40 local volunteers and One! supporters took advantage of the fantastic weather on Saturday July 18, 2009 and joined Tania at Laurier park in Edmonton for the opportunity to visit and chat in a relaxed setting. Tania gave out “funny” awards and had good words to say about everyone who was there. We had the big heart award for Gabriel and Marsi, a boomerang for Julie—above and beyond, a pair of clapping hands for Lorette who always lends a hand—just to name a few.

Lachlan helped to entertain the “younger” attendees. Chris was a master chef of the “dogs”, Bedford donated the fruit, donations covered the other costs and everyone brought something to share.

THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO ATTENDED AND FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
