Manda’s Story

Manda is the middle children of a family of five...well, let me correct that, five and a half - her mom is 7 months pregnant. She has two older brothers, one younger brother and one younger sister.

Manda’s life so far has not been particularly harder or easier than a lot of the other children in the slum, but being the oldest girl in the family she is inherently given many responsibilities. She is expected to help around the home - cleaning, doing dishes, washing clothes. Also, she is always keeping an eye on her younger brother and sister; ensuring that they don’t get into too much trouble, helping them dress and bathe, and of course helping with cooking.

Manda’s father makes about 800 rupees a month (about $27), and her mother does not work. There have been many days where there is no money to buy food to prepare, so the kids are left unfed unless they are successful begging.

Before joining One!, Manda was a begging girl at the local temple. Unfortunately, when hunger strikes, she is still forced to beg. Since joining One!, she is studying and likely giving herself new and better opportunities. At this time, she has learned all of the Hindi script and is just starting to read and write basic words. She has also started learning basic English conversation.

Manda is very stubborn - we hope she uses this to her advantage!!

Manda, seen here in January with that contagious smile!!
Uncle Dean!

The last fieldtrip before I left India for Canada was a very special one. A good friend of mine, came to me and asked if the kids could come over to watch movies. It was so exciting that he was willing to open up his home and his heart to the children.

The kids quickly ordained Dean, Uncle Dean, a title of great respect in India.

Uncle Dean kept spoiling the kids more and more. First he picked out a very popular DVD to show (Badshaw, a Hindi film). Then he brought home brownies and ice cream and Coca-Cola!!! The kids were ecstatic and felt so bad when they couldn’t possibly eat everything that they were given!

For every song (and if you have seen a Hindi film you know there are

many!) the kids would get up and dance.

A couple of the younger kids felt soo at home at Uncle Dean’s with his real beds, that they fell asleep before we knew it and just wouldn’t come out of their slumber!

Thank you Uncle Dean, what an absolutely tremendous gift for the children and One!.

One! Status

As of now, One! Is registered in Canada and the application for Charity status is being made.

In India, the application for registration has just been submitted (By Smita, Doctor Mahajan, Pallavi and myself). Within a couple of weeks we should get a rough confirmation and registration number and then it will take a month to get the official papers.

As for its status in the field, 16 kids from the Khar Danda slum are registered at the local school. The school is very supportive in what we are doing and urging us to extend our activities to other children in the area.

Even more children attend our classes every day and are beginning their education. Cleanliness has been spread and maintained. Parents are very supportive and more often than not learning themselves.
