Jayenti’s Story

Jayenti is the oldest of four children - all boys! He is ten years old. One! First met Jayenti on the first day of school, June 13, 2001. We were taking 8 other children that we had been working with in classes, when Jayenti, out of his own will, approached us and asked us if he could go to school too. Holding back our surprise, we didn’t hesitate to say yes and Jayenti has been a part of the One! gang ever since.

Jayenti is a very avid student. He loves studying and learning and getting things right...then again, who doesn’t. He shows great potential in all areas, but with an added ability in mathematics. When doing addition of subtraction flashcards he is always the winner!

Jayenti is a very gentle and caring boy - and it helps that he always tells the truth. When something happens in Khar Danda and One! Volunteers are busily trying to gather the facts, Jayenti is usually the one that gives us all the answers!

After the successes that Sanju, Jayenti’s mom, saw with Jayenti, she asked One! if her two other sons who were in the village could be a part of One! as well. One! didn’t hesitate before saying YES, and within a week the boys were in Khar Danda. The family has been reunited and all four boys are heading toward an education!

Keep up the hard work Jayenti, your future is brightening!

In this picture, Jayenti is seen on a ride at the Juhu Beach Fair. Since joining One!, he has missed less than ten days of school and hasn’t missed any One! Fieldtrips!
The State of the World...

I have no power to make any speculations as to the reasons that these recent horrific events have happened, nor do can I speculate as to what is going to happen in the future. Instead I am going to try to stick the facts and help you make a decision of your own.

India is an over 75% Hindu country. In 1948 it gained its independence from the British, and at this same time is when the country of Pakistan was created. Millions of Muslims living in ‘India’ fled to Pakistan, and million of Hindus fled from ‘Pakistan’. This is the reason of the ongoing war between Pakistan and India - over the way the land and the people were divided at these births of nations.

India is not yet a target of the United States’ "War on Terrorism" and is also not yet a landing point

for them as there is a country in between India and the main target Afghanistan (Pakistan).

There is no doubt that danger and fears have been greatly augmented. How can they not? The whole world is involved this time, thousands of people have died, and there is no solution to the madness.

Does this change One! and its future? No ... at least not yet. We must continue living. The day that the Canadian Embassy deems India unsafe is the day that One! International will be effected.

Is India safe? My response is this - Is anywhere in the world really safe? What happens in the rest of the world is now happening very close to home also.

GCC News!

The Give-a-Child-a-Chance Program (GCC) is an incredible success. The majority of One!’s initial students are sponsored and we are ready to extend our efforts to include more children and more generous people like you!

Thank you to the following people who have given a chance to one of the One! Children in Khar Danda: Taryn Delaney (Kokila), Kim & Colette (Rahul), Catherine Bauer (Roopa), Kevin Hawryluk & Leah Cairns (Ramoo & Rajeshree), Mr. & Mrs. Delaney (Roshan), Kyle Anderson (Jayenti), Sherilyn Trompetter (Radha). We’d also like to give a continuing thanks to our first sponsors: Colleen Woltjen (Sona), Edd Makarus (Raju), Tara Woltjen (Sangeeta) and Marilyn Spilchen (Vidya). Finally, One! Would like to give a very large Dhanyavad (Thank-You) to Francine Bauer who has given huge monetary and spiritual support!!
