Little Kokila’s Story
Kokila was only three months old when One! Started working in the Khar Danda slum. We have been with her almost her whole life. Kokila is the baby girl in a family of five—all of whom are younger than 8!?! Her family has the hardest time making ends meet out of all of the families in Khar. And because of this her health has suffered. In December of 2001, One! Volunteers were extremely worried. Kokila was so malnourished and her immune system was so feeble that it couldn’t combat a simple baby rash. The rash turned into a skin disease and at one point in December it almost covered her whole body—feet, hands, bum, scalp...everywhere. The prognosis was bleak— it seemed too horrid. It wasn’t. Throughout December we made three trips a day to the slum to apply creams and give Kokila the medicines and vitamins that she needed. After three weeks it worked! There was not a trace of rash left, only the scar showing its severity. Her parents didn’t learn. Only three weeks later, the rash returned. We gave the same care, but also insisted on some actions from the parents to prevent it in the future. Kokila needed to eat because she was obviously not getting enough nutrients from her mother’s milk. Her parent’s listened and Kokila has been eating every day since. And every day she is getting stronger and stronger. The rash has never returned. A little baby who we were worried at one time about just keeping alive is now about to take her first steps—hopefully into the rest of a healthy life! |

What’s Next?
There are so many exciting things that One! is looking forward to—especially getting back to where we were before the BMC arrived. The saga over getting a school room still continues—hopefully ending in success soon. Pallavi has been to the offices no less than 20 times and every time they give her no respect, practically asking her to beg. She is holding her ground, and her pride and slowly we are nearing the end. Volunteer Kavita Algu is to arrive in August. We are excited to have her fresh energy in working with the children and bringing in new ideas. Spreading to more children in more areas of Khar. Pallavi and volunteer Smita spent a lot of time touring around the close vicinity when the families were not talking. They know the area a little better and we hope to spread our work further. |
