Volunteer News
With the continued excellent work of Jen Rowe (arrived in January 2003) and Alysha Lust (arrived April 2003), came some new faces to the gang. Shawna and Neill Pandya from Sherwood Park were our next volunteers to join us India. They came for the month of June, and the timing was absolutely terrible. The trouble over our classroom, and absolutely no place to teach, coupled with the houses being broke down made for a pretty chaotic month with not much work to do. The volunteers went daily to visit the children, but with the rains of monsoon that didn’t last too long. The children quickly bonded with Shawna and Neill in a very short time—they were fellow Gujaratis that stole the kids’ hearts. Thank You, Thank You, for coming to India and taking the time to give a part of your’s! We were also very lucky to have Tracey Noon from England help every Monday for six months. She was amazingly dedicated and came up with some fresh ideas. She started a plant project, which taught the children about responsibility, growth, nourishment, etc. Aside from adding her helping hands in the classroom, Tracey never came a day without bringing material donations or working on monetary donations from various sources. She lived in India for five years and had to return back to England in July. We already miss her enthusiasm, fabulous energy and incredible generosity. The children speak of her very often. We are soooooo lucky at One! International for the incredible volunteers that we have had over the last three years!!!! |

Fabulous Fundraising
June and July were busy months on the fundraising front. The 5th Bi-Annual Fundraiser was on June 14, 2003. Although our numbers of attendees were down, it was an enthusiastic group who enjoyed the video coverage of the children and families taken in Mumbai. Tania was able to capture the living conditions, but mostly the enthusiasm of the children to be on the camera and to show off a little. The video coverage brings the situation in India a little closer to home. The silent auctin was very successful as people were particularly interested in the beautiful items that Tania brought back from India.
In July, in conjunction with family visits in Vancouver, British Columbia, three presentations were made to a total of about forty people. Several new One! friends were added to the family. Money and gifts-in-kind were gathered from each presentation. More importantly several people have passed on the information to others. |
Huge Support
It is hard to find enough adjectives to give proper credit to our new supporters. Rav and Shannon Rupnarain have made a large donation as well as supporting through the Give-A-Child-A-Chance Program. The world is truly a small place. Tania met Lyne Eaker on the plane from England to Canada. Lyne Lives less than one block away in Sherwood Park. Lyne and his children Megan and Aldrin have made a large donation. Bedford Williams has been wonderful. He supports the goals of One! and has been supportive in a monetary as well as gifts-in-kind manner. Our New York family has grown: Nadira Shalim has joined the GCC Program as has Jenny McElroy. Jenny is originally from Ireland and she has enlisted her sister Clare McElroy to be a GCC supporter as well. We have added Ireland to our world community. Another local Alberta family has given a child a chance to learn and be a more productive member of society. Gayle Burritt and her mother Ann joined the GCC Program at the 5th Bi-Annual Fundraiser in June. We have had many one time donations, donations for our Silent Auction, food items for our dinner.
