Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day.

Clover Bar

We have a new partner. Two students at Clover Bar junior High in Shewrood Park organized a Wake-a-Thon as part of their Leadership class. If their efforts are any indication of our future leaders, we will be in good hands. The Wake-a-Thon raised over $6000 for One! This money will be ear-marked for needed medical attention for our children and families. One of our dads had surgery on his leg, one girl is being treated for typhoid, one mom went in for day surgery, and one girl is being treated for gross malnutrition. These are some of the ongoing problems that One! Families face and will be made easier through the efforts of Clover Bar’s Youth.

Death of Sagar

At the beginning of March a new family started getting involved with One!. The family (a 4 year old boy, a 3 year old girl, and a 1 year old boy, mom) were living in the Carter Road area along with the other families. We saw the state of the children and immediately persued the mom. The mom finally listened to our warnings that the children desperately needed to see a doctor and get help.

Three days later we took the children in to see a paediatrician. Sahil (the older boy) was healthy but the same could not be said for his younger siblings. The doctor basically said that he didn’t know if there was any hope but try this.

Three days later, baby Sagar died. He didn’t have a chance. He was 11 months old and weighed just over 3 kilos.

Death is never good, but at least Snehal (the children’s mother) learned from Sagar’s life that she had to give her LIVING children much better care and attention. Piyu who was three years old and only 6 kilos when we met her, was in the same situation as her baby brother. She was extremely malnourished. Luckily, along with Snehal we have been giving her all that we can (love and medical care) and now she is doing much better. She is even crawling and starting to talk!

Our Teacher Sandeep—Good-Bye Desai

After extensive rounds of interviews, we finally hired Sandeep Kumar as our first qualified Hindi Teacher.

Throughout the interviews, Sandeep seemed to have the energy and the enthusiasm needed to work with our children. He immediately befriended them and the children (especially the older boys) were very happy to have him around. We are looking forward to the positive influence that Sandeep will have both on

One! International and the children.

Sandeep will be responsible for mainly teaching the Hindi classes but will take part in all of the One! Schedule—including Saturday outings! Sandeep is a marathon runner and the children will gain from his love of sport. Sandeep’s enthusiasm for athletics will have the children addicted fast.

Sandeep has had an incredibly positive influence on VInod and we look forward to their friendship growing.
