Life is a great big canvas; throw all the paint on it you can!

Rains

As always, the rains threw a bit of a monkey wrench on the activities of Mumbai and the rest of India. The rains started out very strong this year. We even had to cancel a couple of days of school, and the children of different families missed a few other days here and there. Definitely understandable considering the houses that they live in and their difficulty in getting around from place to place. The families were especially worried towards the beginning of July when news came that there was abundant flooding in Gujarat state (the home town of most of our families). They were waiting for news from friends and family—as of this point everyone’s loved ones are safe.

Great Start

We had a fantastic start to the school year at the beginning of June. The children were anxious to get back to studying after the Summer Fun Celebration and their one week holiday in May. Their enthusiasm made everything start smoothly.

For the first week we had more than 50 children every day. It was very exciting...but difficult to find enough space!

All of the school groups got shifted around and it was very exciting since a lot of the children ‘graduated’ from a lower group. The old ‘C’ children were so excited to go to the ‘B’ group because that meant that they got to go UPSTAIRS!!!

Another huge development was that we managed to keep all of the babies and ‘kinderkids’ in the kinderkid classroom. No babies interrupting their older sibling’s learning! Even Muskaan, Kaajol, Partip and Nagesh got used to this and even began to appreciate being around all the toys and music and fun!

The only glitch in our great start was when Sarita (mom of eight of our children) ran away with a younger man. She ran away leaving the children on their own with grandma. Not knowing what to do, the children traveled up to where another of our families are living to get a little help and support.

We hope that Sarita comes to her senses and returns to her families. She seemed like a mother who genuinely loved her children so maybe that will draw her back.

We had another little drama with Lila’s husband, Chaman, drinking so much that she was thinking about leaving him. Luckily he came to his senses and this situation is improving.

Besides the little dramas here and there, we are very proud of the children’s development—not only scholarly but as brilliant little people.

Two More Babies!

First Kanchan, and then Rekha added to their families a very healthy baby boy.

Kanchan’s baby was born in the middle of May and after only a couple of months he is already chubby and focusing his eyes! His name is Hritick. We were happy when Kanchan made the decision to have her tubes tied just after birth. Kanchan’s hands are full enough with her 7 children.

Rekha’s son Nitesh isn’t growing quite as fast but is healthy and happy!
