May Program
Our program in May is more of a Fun Celebration than a formal Program, and this year was no different! Throughout May the children worked on songs and dances and plays. We divided the children into three groups, with Reshma, Manda, and Sonal choosing their team. It was fantastic to see the girls not make it a popularity contest, but try to pick a team that would be easy to work with it and have the most talent. Volunteer Chelsea worked diligently at teaching each group a different English song. The play was the same for all three groups—it was a mock classroom with good and bad students, teacher’s pets, etc. Volunteers David and Nevidka managed to bring the play alive despite language barriers and only having just arrived. Unanimously, the students loved the dances the best. Vinod and Vinita choreographed some more great numbers. In the end, Sonal’s group swept the contest!!

Erica’s thoughts
“Though it’s been almost a year since I returned home from my time working with One!, I received a DVD of my time there ……., and tears still came to my eyes watching it. I still feel that it was only yesterday I was sitting with those kids, watching them develop and grow.” After seeing little Piyu progress from non movement to dancing ……”I realized that it does not take anything enormous to make a huge impact in the life of a child.” …..”These little skills [reading and math] will make a huge difference in their lives…..children learn to have pride..” “Being part of One! has been such a special experience in my life. Not everyday was filled with the “warm fuzzy feeling” I had expected….some days could be very frustrating….It is easy to get discouraged….for every child you help, you will see 5 more….” “..if you can make a change for just one child at a time, you have indeed made a difference.’ |
News Shorts!
We have a new school partner—Glenmary school in Peace River, Alberta. The children have donated school supplies, and games, and will be writing letters to One!’s children. Reshma (our student chef) is an excellent cook, she cooks daily at the school for both the students and the staff. Everyone misses her food if she isn’t there. A crazy, horrible incident happened in July. While volunteers David and Nedi were sleeping, a robber broke into the house without them waking. David woke while he was still in the house! Thankfully, the man escaped without stealing anything and most importantly without anyone getting hurt. Our new semester started in June, and we had to adjust our classes because we had too many students! The children are now divided into eight groups from top to bottom: A1,A2,A3,B1,B2,C1,C2,D (KinderKids). Through the month of May, the teachers and volunteers worked very hard at preparing curriculum and their class planning. Science was completely restructured. The team worked extremely hard and were more than ready when June arrived. It has already proven to be a great semester! |
