You can’t fix someone’s life—

You can create the circumstances which allow them to fix their own life.

New Teacher!

Our need for more skilled and enthusiastic teachers seems to be never-ending. With the addition of our second school in Nallasopara and the continuous growth in Khar, we decided to hire another teacher in April.

We decided to hire Jayanti who has been in contact with One! for over three years. Jayanti had experience in various schools and was excited to add her experience to our team. Jayanti is most practiced in working with Grade 6 and up, but will now have the opportunity to work with children of all ages.

Jayanti has already added a lot to our team and we look forward to what she will continue to give in the future!

Lucky Duck Days!

For two weeks (the last week of March and the first week of April) we participated in the filming of a documentary.

Tracey Jackson, one of our most generous sponsors from New York is producing and directing a documentary named “Lucky Ducks”. The premise of the documentary is to show how the baby boomer middle and upper class population of North America are providing their children with so much that it may be ‘too much’. By giving, giving and then giving some more, the youth of today are not learning boundaries or appreciation for what they have—possessions, people and values.

Part of the documentary was for Taylor Templeton (a 15 year old New York lady) to come and spend two weeks with the children of One!. Through the experience, the hope was to open up Taylor’s eyes to hard work, a sense of accomplishment, and an appreciation for where she comes from and what she was gifted with in life.

The experience allowed us to take part in something new and exciting and make more friends! Thanks to Tracey, Gabe, Nick, Taylor, Alysha, Shreena and all One! staff, volunteers, children and families for all of their understanding and hard work surrounding the project! Keep your fingers crossed for the success of the film and keep your eyes and ears open to go and see it!!!

Khar School Renovations

For the last six months in Mumbai, it felt like we were in booming Alberta. There wasn’t a carpenter around that had any time to spare!

Finally at the beginning of May we found a carpenter and were so happy to start our long overdue renovations.

Since the school has grown and the number of classes increased, we desperately needed to ‘create’ more rooms in the space that we had. In two of our larger rooms, we built dividers so that we could run two classes at the same time.

We changed the door latches to door knobs so that we no longer had to pound on the doors to have them opened!

In summer, the two newer rooms on the main floor were absolutely stifling. We remade the windows in both rooms and installed an exhaust fan.

We were given as a donation three very large whiteboards from a foreign company based in Mumbai. We fixed them on the walls of three of the older children’s classrooms—but we installed them with wooden doors on the front so that they will last us much longer!

All of these renovations were donated to us by a good friend of ours in Mumbai—Sally. She is incredible at gathering donations, both financial and material, and never promises anything unless she is going to do it!

Even though the renovations took a long time to get organized, they turned out fantastic and we are all proud of our ’new’ school!
