Volunteers Keeping Us Strong

In July we had three incredible volunteers. Amy and Alex from Canada halted their travels around the world to spend two months with the children. Both the girls had a perfect mix of discipline amongst all of their love for the children.

Shilpa from the USA joined us for only a month but was all smiles sfor the whole month. Her positive energy definitely rubbed off on the girls—the boys were all too stuck in their crushes!

For one month (mid-aug to mid-sept) we had a four person team from the UK.: brothers Joe and Jon and their friends Luanna and Sarah. Joe and Jon were the first volunteers to go to the Nallasopara school. It was extremely challenging but they embraced it and helped to set it up for future volunteers. Lu and Sarah also spent two weeks in Nallasopara giving the children support while at the same time continuing the administration work of the boys. All four had warm, friendly personalities that all of the children instantly stuck to.

Nallasopara Takes Off

Despite losing two of our key staff in Nallasopara, August and September were months of growth and enthusiasm.

The potential in Nallasopara is immense. At one point we had over 100 children registered with new families still wanting to join after that daily. We decided in the middle of September that it was impossible for us to keep up with the demand so we capped the registration to the 60 children that had the most consistent attendance while informing the other students that registration would reopen in January 2008.

This turned out to be a fantastic move It was incentive for the children who were registered to maintain their attendance record and work ethic / behaviour in classes.

We are currently conducting family interviews with the parents of the students to try and survey the area according to the social work needs. As this progresses we will have a better idea as to how to move forward in—where the needs of the families lie and which Khar programs chould be implemented in what order at the new Nallasopara school.

Our main goal is to calm the growth slightly so that it can happen in a more natural process with the trust and appreciation or the families for us growing at the same time as our trust and appreciation for them.

It is an exciting adventure in Nallasopara. Thankfully there seem to be way more ups than downs and lots of smiles on wonderful children.
