New Fundraising Format
|
|
Since the November Fundraiser would be close to One!’s seventh birthday, we decided to do A Retrospective— 7 years in videos and stories— and pay tribute to Tania’s vision.
We rented a different hall with a theatre style format, had lots of finger foods, the silent auction that everyone has come to expect, a raffle, and lots of wonderful people to share the evening with.
Tania did a wonderful job of putting together a video showing the growth of “our” children over the seven years. We also showed a few of the 19 videos and presentations of the past 7 years.
Because 2007 has been a year of speed bumps and pot holes, Marilyn shared a quote from G Mortenson who failed in his attempt to climb K2 but went on to build schools in remote areas. Someone had told him: “Of course you are going to run into hurdles and obstacles—what you are trying to do is harder than climbing K2.” (2nd highest world mountain)

Tania
“You listened to your heart. You took your dream and made it a miraculous reality. You have made the future a brighter place for many children and families, and generations to come. You have made the world a better place. We marvel at you. We respect you. We honour you. We love you. We—all of us— want to thank you for taking us along on your incredible life journey. THANK YOU “

Reshma’s Job
|
|
One of our long-time students was given a tremendous opportunity in September.
Reshma as the school cook is responsible for cooking food for all of the students and staff. Her food was so tasty that volunteers Joe, Jon, Lu and Sara asked why she wasn’t given the job at the volunteer apartment. One!’s practice had always been to hire someone outside of One! for the house with trust as a question for students and so as to give the volunteers privacy.
However, if the volunteers WANTED to have Reshma there, then who are we to stop it!
Reshma goes to the apartment twice a day. She cooks breakfast in the morning, cleans, and cooks dinner at night.
Early complaints are that she misses days, is a little lazy with her cleaning, and needs to learn more English.
If Reshma can move through these faults, she can become a maid and jump her pay scale almost ten-fold!!
